The other side of Bukit Bintang - a photoblog
Changkat Bukit Bintang, Changkat Raja Chulan, Tengkat Tong Shin, Jalan Ceylon, Bukit Ceylon...

I've heard of these places but never really gave thought about them until the morning of two Saturdays ago. Up to that morning, the thoughts that ran through me were "Just another run down area of KL" and "Must be a red-light district". How ignorant I was at that time... To my surprise, it turned out to be a rather nice neighborhood. Tengkat Tong Shin, Changkat Bukit Bintang and Changkat Raja Chulan are filled with budget lodges, pubs, Chinese and some Mamak restaurants, and specialty restaurants and shops, all in refurbished pre-war colonial shoplots, wonderful. Bohemian, I heard someone described it. I never thought this place existed at first until my curious mind made me wander into this area on that morning (So pardon me for being a jakun just this once..). At one end is Bukit Ceylon, a quiet hilltop residential area overshadowed by KL Tower, next to it is the place I mentioned earlier, adjacent to it is Bukit Bintang and at the other end of it is Jalan Alor which I bet most of you know what is Jalan Alor is famous for apart from great hawker food.

An Avril Lavigne's hideout in Kuala Lumpur? Or just some Avril Lavigne fanatic?

The aliens from War of the Worlds have landed in KL! Nolah, just a water tower on top of Bukit Ceylon....

A good looking art-deco restaurant, but how good the food is remains a mystery....

The huge beige building in the background sticks out like a sore thumb, but nevertheless, adds color to the neighborhood....

A cold and dark day in KL. This road leads directly into Jalan Alor....

Hey do you know if there is ample parking space along or nearby Tengkat Tong Shin?

A friend of mine has recently suggested that we go stay at one of the new budget places there (I'm not from KL) but I'm having my reservations because of the car park issue ... and also if it's a dodgy area.

Would appreciate any info on this. Thanks!

Hey thanx for ur feedback, Ziggie =) From what i know and seen, parking is rather limited in and aronud Tengkat Tong Shin, there are serveral open air public parking areas but its not advisable to park your car there at night. There are parking bays along the road and by around 9-10pm I'm sure there will be some empty spots. But traffic can get really bad in the evening and on weekends.

The area aound Tengkat Tong Shin is pretty okay, some parts are a bit dilapidated. But my advise is never to walk alone at night and also to be aware of your surroundings at all times. But overall, it should be fine, some shops open till night time and a 7-Eleven outlet at the end of the road is open all the time.

So, there you go, my 2 cents about the area =)

    Thanks!

After much thought (& arguing, hehe) we decided to not stay in the area!

Might go have a look though ... sounds pretty interesting.
